Comparison

Everwrite vs Scrivener.

Scrivener is a deep, capable program, and plenty of writers are right to stay with it. Everwrite is a private, native novel-writing studio for Mac, sold once. This page compares price, files, export, and continuity tools. It uses what Everwrite publishes about itself, plus a few public facts from Scrivener's own Mac App Store listing. If the differences here are not problems you actually have, keep the tool that already holds the book.

The short version

  • Price. Everwrite is $19.99 once on the Mac App Store, with no subscription and no in-app purchases. Scrivener is also a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Everwrite's notes put the comparison at $19.99 versus $59.99, and the US Mac App Store listing for Scrivener 3 shows $59.99. Store prices differ by country and change, so check the listing where you would buy.
  • Files. Every Everwrite scene is a plain Markdown file inside a macOS document package you can open in Finder. Scrivener keeps the book in its own project.
  • Continuity. Everwrite can build a Story Bible on the Mac and flag contradictions. It never writes the prose. Scrivener's listing describes checking consistency yourself, and character-sheet templates. Those are manual tools, not the same pass.
  • Export. Everwrite writes a Standard Manuscript Format .docx, a reflowable EPUB 3, and a manuscript-format PDF without a Compile setup. Scrivener uses Compile, which its listing says can produce Word, PDF, and EPUB. Writers often find that step powerful and fiddly.
  • Machines. The Mac app needs an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 26.2 or later. Intel Macs are not supported. Everwrite Go, the free iPhone and iPad app, works on its own. The Mac app is not required, and it offers more. Scrivener's Mac and Windows versions are bought separately, and its Mac release notes describe a Universal app that also runs on Intel Macs.

Where they work alike

Both are built for a long manuscript you can split apart and drag back together. Scrivener's binder is for scenes and chapters. Everwrite's binder is the same idea, and its Plan view lays those scenes out as index cards or an outline table. Dragging a card restructures the book. Scrivener's listing describes the same motion: a corkboard, an outliner, and a synopsis on each section.

Both are one-time purchases. Scrivener's Mac and Windows licenses are separate, which is the model Everwrite's alternatives guide names. Scrivener's snapshots save a version of a document before a rewrite. Everwrite keeps per-scene snapshots too, plus named versions, rotating whole-book backups, and a Trash that can bring a deleted scene back.

Both can leave you with Word, EPUB, and PDF. Everwrite's step is direct: standard manuscript format for the .docx, a reflowable EPUB 3, and a manuscript-format PDF, for the whole book or selected chapters. Scrivener's step is Compile. The listing says Compile can produce a single document, Word, PDF, and EPUB. The depth is the point of Compile, and so is the friction of settings you may only open a few times a year.

What Everwrite is built to add

The Story Bible holds characters, places, objects, facts, aliases, and relationships. With Apple Intelligence it can read the draft on the Mac, fill that bible, and flag a contradiction such as an eye color that changes or a timeline that does not add up. It does not generate or rewrite prose, and that pass is not uploaded to a third-party AI service. On a Mac without Apple Intelligence the Story Bible still works if you keep it by hand. The iPhone app does not run AI.

There is no account and no Everwrite cloud. The privacy policy says the app does not collect personal information and does not include analytics, advertising, or tracking. The manuscript stays in files on the Mac unless you put the document in a folder you already sync, such as iCloud Drive or Dropbox. Everwrite Go is a free iPhone and iPad app that works on its own. The Mac app is not required, and it offers more. If you use both, Go opens the same book over iCloud Drive.

Everwrite can import a Word .docx or a Scrivener project. The interface is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Two features, the continuity AI and the name generator, use Apple's on-device model. Turning Apple Intelligence on is a one-time macOS download, not an Everwrite download, and there is no API key.

Where Scrivener is the better fit

  • You already know it, and Compile, the learning curve, or the project format are not slowing you down. Staying is a fair decision.
  • You want metadata, collections, and split views. Everwrite's alternatives guide lists those with the corkboard and outliner as the depth people learn Scrivener for. Everwrite's pages describe a binder, index cards, and an outline table. They do not describe metadata, collections, or split views.
  • You need Windows. The Mac and Windows versions are separate purchases. Everwrite for Mac does not run on Windows.
  • You are on an Intel Mac. Everwrite supports Apple Silicon only. Scrivener's Mac App Store notes for version 3.2 describe a Universal app that runs on Intel as well as Apple Silicon.
  • You write scripts. Scrivener's listing includes a scriptwriting mode for screenplays, stage plays, and comic scripts. Everwrite's published feature list is a novel studio. It does not describe screenplay tools.

A steep first month, a Compile dialog, and Dropbox-based syncing with no first-party cloud are the frictions Everwrite's guides hear from writers who start looking. None of those, on its own, means you should leave. Scrivener's own listing also says its separate iOS app can sync. Check the current sync notes before you treat any of this as permanent.

If you move a manuscript

Keep the original Scrivener project, work on a copy, and export a plain DOCX or RTF before you import anything. Everwrite can read a Scrivener project or a Word document. The practical checklist is in Switching from Scrivener. A wider look at other Mac writing apps is in Best Scrivener alternatives for Mac. Questions about files, offline use, and system requirements are on the FAQ.

Price and the phone

Everwrite is $19.99 once. The pricing card says lifetime updates. There is no separate free trial. The app includes a demo book so you can try the workflow, and refunds are requested from Apple the same way as other Mac App Store apps. There is no account to create.

Everwrite Go is free for iPhone and iPad and works on its own. The Mac app is not required. It offers more, and if you use both you can start a book on the phone and the Mac app can adopt it with one click. Scene editing, chapter restructuring, synopses, and statuses are on the phone. You can search characters, places, and facts, pin a quick list, and browse relationship connections. Worldbuilding answers can be edited on the phone and sync back.
